Trade Earthmovers Review: Takeuchi TB280FR Excavator
Evarn Covich jumps into the cab of a new Takeuchi TB280FR 8.6-tonne excavator and finds one of the most well-thought-out machines he has ever operated.
A Quick History
In 1970 Takeuchi was asked to find a way to mechanise the digging of house foundations. A year later, the company produced the TB1000, the worldโs first 360-degree compact excavator, weighing 2 tonnes. Since then Takeuchi has built a strong reputation for listening to customers and turning their ideas into real machines. When you test drive a new machine from a company with this record, expectations are naturally higher.
The TB280FR tested at Semco Groupโs Brisbane branch is one of Takeuchiโs new zero-tail-swing excavators. It weighs around 8.6 tonnes and replaced the older TB180FR late last year.
Walk Around
During my first inspection, I noticed the fuel filler point behind the cab in a small compartment. This makes refuelling at ground level easy, or you can use the fuel transfer pump at the rear. The fuel tank doubles as the step into the cab, making smart use of space. I also noted the thicker steel panels on the outside for added protection of inner components.
Engine Access
When raising the rear engine cover, I saw that daily service points are within easy reach from the ground. The cab can also tilt forward for better motor access. The 3.3-litre, 4-cylinder Yanmar 4TNV98CT engine delivers 69.2 horsepower (51.6kW), which is 9 percent more than the TB180FR, and meets Tier 4 final standards. Opening the offside door revealed the radiator, oil cooler and air filter. A bonus attachment for grease gun storage was included, a practical detail often overlooked.
Tracks and Stability
Triple flange rollers reduce the chance of dropped tracks. The self-adjusting tensioning system removes the hassle of manual pumping, which is often awkward and messy. This saves time and avoids downtime costs that can frustrate clients.
STS Boom System
The boom has a reach of 7045mm, a dig depth of 4545mm, and a dump height of 4480mm. Takeuchiโs patented side-to-side (STS) boom system lets the boom slide under the cab from one side to the other. This design keeps the bucket in clear view through the front window. Fully retracting the boom makes the TB280FR a zero-swing machine that can turn within its 2300mm track width. This feature is unique to Takeuchi and a major advantage for operators.
Auxiliary Hydraulics
The TB280FR includes dual auxiliary hydraulics. The first delivers 148Lpm with proportional control, ideal for drills, mulchers, and rock breakers. The secondary runs at 58Lpm, perfect for tilt hitches and hydraulic thumbs. Both circuits are programmable, allowing flow adjustments to match attachments. Safety features like boom and arm holding valves with overload alarms come standard.
Operator Comfort
The cab meets ROPS1 and FOPS2 standards. It includes forward and rear work lights plus one on the boom. Entry is easy thanks to large steps on the track frame and fuel tank. Inside, the seat is adjustable but cramped for taller operators. The levers and switches, however, are well placed. Controls like the auxiliary proportional slide switch allow smooth operation of tilt hitches and buckets.
Visibility and Climate Control
Large windows give clear vision around the machine. The front window lifts out and the bottom panel stores behind the seat for extra legroom. Air conditioning kept the cab cool at 30ยฐC even with frequent door openings. The LCD dash displayed key data clearly, from fuel and revs to work modes and attachment status.
On-Site Performance
Testing on mixed fill, the TB280FR impressed with smooth operation and strong pushing power. The automatic kick-down only engaged when tackling a steep climb. Digging trenches through compacted and virgin ground felt effortless, with stability throughout. Even breaking a deep tree root, the machine stayed strong and steady. The hydraulic response made it easy to cut accurate grades. The dozer blade, with its float function, produced clean finishes on hard ground.
The Verdict
With features like ROPS and FOPS cab, self-adjusting tracks, dual auxiliary hydraulics, and Takeuchiโs patented STS and FR boom systems, the TB280FR offers exceptional value. Aside from limited legroom for taller operators, the machine delivers comfort, efficiency, and smooth performance.
Trade Earthmovers readers looking for a reliable, operator-friendly excavator will find the TB280FR one of the most complete machines available straight from the showroom.
